A
properly lit aquarium becomes the focal point of a room. Fish also need
a certain amount of light to stay happy and healthy. The only way to
achieve both these affects is with aquarium lights.
Fish need light to survive. How much light you need depends on the
type of tank you have and the size of it. If you have a saltwater
aquarium then your fish will require a more light then a freshwater
aquarium. In fact, for some freshwater fish, the natural sunlight
in a room or the light emitted from ceiling lights can be enough for
survival. For deeper tanks, you’ll also require stronger lighting
so that it will be able to reach into the depths of the tank.
In general there are two types of aquarium lights: incandescent and
fluorescent. While incandescent lights cost less when purchased, they
actually cost more to operate then fluorescent lights. Fluorescent
lights use electricity more efficiently making them, in the long run,
a more economical light. There are also types of lighting that are
more for fun. These submersible lights come in a variety of colors.
Some advanced systems can even emulate sunrise and sunset.
Remember there’s a fine balance between giving your fish light
to survive and going overboard and actually sabotaging your eco-system.
Light promotes the growth of algae and bacteria which can affect the
clarity of the water and kill fish and plant life. To reduce this
affect, turn off the tank lights when you are not in the room or when
you are at work or out of town.
Aquarium lights are the easy solution to keeping your fish healthy,
enjoying your tank at night, and accentuating your exotic fish and
beautiful plants.
