Fish tanks

When it comes to choosing fish tanks, it is best to consider all your options. There are various choices to make before you purchase an aquarium. Consider the following points:

Materials
Glass was once the only option when it came to fish tanks. Now acrylic is a viable choice. Glass is usually less expensive and heavier than acrylic. Glass can also be broken with a sharp or forceful impact. Occasionally, glass fish tanks crack or the glue in the seams deteriorates, causing a messy leak.

Acrylic fish tanks are melded together so that they are actually a seamless tank. This prevents leaks and doesn’t require glue that could disintegrate. Acrylic weighs less than glass, is normally clearer and more expensive than glass. The downside to acrylic is that is does scratch easily. There are now products to rub out the scratches in acrylic.

Shape
With the increasing popularity of acrylic fish aquariums, various shapes are now available. Glass tanks are generally rectangular. Acrylic tanks can be hexagonal, curved or various other shapes. Customized acrylic fish tanks are available; however they are more expensive than a traditional rectangular aquarium. An unusually shaped aquarium may be just the thing to make a bold statement or fit well with contemporary décor.

While different shaped fish tanks are catching on in popularity, they are not always the healthiest choice. A rectangular tank will allow for better circulation in a tank. If you are set on an unusual, interesting shape, be sure to meet additional circulation needs with appropriate (sometimes more specialized and expensive) filters and pumps.

Size
When talking to fish experts about tank size, it quickly becomes apparent that size matters. There are several reasons that size makes a difference in keeping fish. First of all, the size of a fish tank determines the size and amount of fish that can live in that space. Some fish require more space than other fish and fish come in all sizes.

If you want a sizable aquarium, experts suggest starting with a 55 gallon fish tank. This is a decent sized tank that can handle a few fish well, but it is not so huge that is overwhelming. Selecting fish tanks is the first step to enjoying fish as pets. With careful consideration you will soon enjoy the tranquility of your fish swimming in peaceful waters.
