When
glass fish tanks spring leaks (and this is not a terribly uncommon problem),
it is not necessarily time to get a new tank. The time spent repairing
a leak is well worth the money you will save yourself from buying a
new aquarium. Here are some tips to get you started.
• Find the leak – To repair a leak, you must obviously
first find it. Once found, empty out water from your tank to below
the leak level (empty out water until the leaking stops.
• Scrape away silicon – First clean and dry the area.
Then make sure that you scrape away the silicon not just where the
leak is, but an inch or so around it, too – a single edge razor
blade is a good tool for this. Use acetone to clean it up, being careful
to not allow it to seep into the tank – apply it to a paper
towel.
• Silicone sealant – not just any sealants will do. Be
sure to use a 100% silicone sealant, one that is non-toxic. Wait 24
hours, and then refill the tank (be sure to use dechlorinated water
at the same temperature as the tank.
• Check leak – Make sure the leak has stopped. If not,
repeat the process. If it still does not work, it may be time to start
looking for new glass fish tanks. Or you may even choose to go with
acrylic!
